Today, we remembered the tragic events of September 11, 2001.  They say you will never forget where you were, or what you were doing when you experience a major marker in history.  I guess that is true, because I was living in Memphis, Scott and I had just gotten engaged, and I was at work.  I remember being on the phone, and as I ended my conversation, the radio on my desk was suddenly reporting wall to wall news rather than the music just a few moments before.  Katie Couric was on the radio talking about the events.  Not Ron, Steve and Karen that I listened to every morning.  As the events began to unfold, the chatter in the office turned from business to disbelief.  How could anyone do such a thing?

Suddenly the corporate initiative no longer seemed important.  We all wanted to contact the ones we loved and huddle together.  Everyone put aside their business of the day and sat in the conference room watching as the towers fell.  Then as the news turned to the Pentagon and the plane that went down in the field, we all continued to watch.  Robotically we went through lunch and the remainder of the day.

On my way home, I stopped to fill up with gas.  I was appalled even more that gas prices had sky rocked in less than 24 hours. On my way to work, gas about $1.79, and on my way home it was $4.79.  I remember thinking that I will have to make it, and if they run out of gas, I will stay home.

Scott was in Nashville at the Tennessee State Fair showing cattle, and I couldn't get in touch with him.  All the circuits were full and I couldn't get through.  I knew he should be back that night, and I was so thankful to see him again.

In the days following, the patriotism our country showed was touching.  Everyone displayed their patriotism and proudly put American flags on their cars.  There were decals and window flags on cars, wreaths tied with red, white and blue ribbons on the doors of many homes and even business showed that they were proud to be American.  An event like this brought us together as a nation in a way like nothing else in my lifetime.

As an American, it is easy to take our freedom for granted.  I have never known what it is like to live in bondage or captivity. I have never know what it is like to be attacked or have my freedom questioned. Freedom is easy to talk about, especially when others are fighting the battle for us.

Today, as I reflect on the events of 10 years ago, I am reminded of the ultimate sacrifice that many men have paid to ensure that our country remains free.  Others have fought for our freedom, and came back home to tell about the battle.  I am forever grateful for your service and dedication.  I might not be fighting a daily fight for freedom, but I can cheer you on from the sidelines.  May you have our ultimate respect and admiration.  With every care package we send, may you feel the love from your fellow citizen.

As I reflect on the events of September 11, 2001, my thoughts and prayers are on those who were directly affected by this tragedy.  May we never forget what happened on that beautiful September day.

Until next time, keep adventuring and looking for joy in the small details of life!

Sarah
