Compost Piles...a Fun Kid's Treat!

Last week, Pickles and I made our share of fun, kid friendly treats.  For April Fool's Day, she wanted something even a little sneaky.  She read the Disney Family Fun magazine from cover to cover looking for any idea that she might guilt me into.  She even tried to sell me on making a doll house out of a cardboard box, and furniture out of paper egg cartons.  I am up for all types of craft projects, but had to put my foot down on this one.  We have a furnished doll house, and she never plays with it.  Anyway, back to the compost piles.  She saw this idea in the magazine, and I knew we had to make them.

Basically you make a box out of pretzel sticks and chocolate almond bark.  I squirted the melted almond bark on the backside of a group of pretzels, but next time I will spread it smooth to make construction of the box easier. Basically I made a base using a pretzel stick for my guide and then made four sides.  After they were all constructed, I  filled them with "dirt cake," and put gummie worms and gummie fish as decoration.  The entire class loved the compost treats!  This is really simple, just takes a little patience and time.

Assembling the bases...

All the little compost piles made, and filled with finely ground Oreo crumbs.

An upclose of building a compost pile.

The cream filling...

Topped with more crushed Oreo's and gummy critters!
Compost Piles

Boxes:
1 bag of pretzel sticks
1 package chocolate flavored almond bark

Arrange the pretzel sticks to build the base and four sides for each box. Melt the almond bark, and spread over the arranged pretzel sticks.  Make sure each piece is square and will fit together.

Dirt cake:
1 bag of Oreo's finely crushed

Filling:
1 8 oz. package cream cheese
1/4 cup butter, softened
1 cup powdered sugar
1 large box of vanilla instant pudding
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
3 cups of milk
1 8oz. tub Cool Whip, thawed

Cream together cream cheese and butter until smooth and satiny.  Mix in powdered sugar until well combined.  In a separate bowl, mix together milk, pudding, vanilla and Cool Whip.  Add cream cheese mixture and mix well.

In your prepared compost boxes, place a layer of Oreo's on the bottom.  Add a layer of filling and top with more crushed Oreo's.  Decorate with your favorie gummy critters.

Enjoy!

Until next time, keep adventuring and looking for joy in the small details of life!
