Stepping Back in Time...An Adventure in History

Today, I had the privilege of going along on a field trip with my daughter who is in second grade.  We went to the Pink Palace, and took a step back in time exploring the history of Memphis.  What a neat museum.  The Pink Palace was originally built by Clarence Saunders the founder of Piggly Wiggly.  It is interesting that this mansion was never lived in, and was lost in bankruptcy. The home was given to the City of Memphis, and has been a museum since the 1920's.

I am amazed at the interest some exhibits draw, while others are passed over. Pickles was fascinated by the gowns worn by the royal court of the Cotton Carnival.  She also loved the uniforms worn by women during the various military battles. She was especially interested by the Red Cross uniform worn during World War I.  However the most talked about exhibit was the one portraying the medicinal practice of leaches.  She could not understand why anyone would ever have a slimy bug suck their blood! The replica of the original Piggly Wiggly was another favorite. She couldn't believe that they sold some of the canned good of the time.  She asked me what Veal Loaf would be, and my only guess is it is like a potted meat.  Not something I would spend my $0.13 for.

Prior to our field trip, I heard on the new that Jane Russell passed away.  A few weeks ago, while looking through my Grammy's recipe box, I found a copy of Jane Russell's Body-Balance Reducing Diet.  I looked over the yellowed pages in awe.  Now, if only I could make this diet plan work for me.  I would love to lose a pound a day!!! I leave you with a copy of the original, and hope you enjoy looking over the diet as much as I did.

Until next time, keep adventuring and looking for joy in the small details of life!
